Filtering before or after querying?

It is important to clarify the difference between filtering before querying (eg. advanced search) and filtering after querying (faceting or refinement).

In many cases you arrive at the search page after having made a query, which is why we recommend a well designed faceting. The visitor can thus with just one click drill down into the results.

The form for advanced search can trick the user to do refinements before the query with the possible outcome that all relevant results are not being displayed. If you still want to offer advanced search, it may be displayed as an expandable box, with a default collapsed state.
